This month marks the 45th anniversary of the publication debuts of both CLUB and ELITE (apparently Canada's first hardcore) magazine (1975). The final print issue for ELITE was either Feb or Apr 1983.

FEBRUARY 1975 ON THE WORLD STAGE
The British Conservative Party has chosen 50yr old Margaret Thatcher as its new leader. She will be the first-ever woman to head a British political party after a landslide victory over the other 4 - all male - candidates. Mrs. Thatcher - who served as Secretary of State for Science & Education in Ted Heath's Government - exclaimed "It's like a dream." As the MP for Finchley, north London since Octber 1959, she rejected suggestions of great celebrations saying, "Good heavens, no. There's far too much work to be done." Mrs. Thatcher forced Ted Heath to resign as party leader last week when she trounced him in the first round of the leadership race with 130 votes to his 119. Hugh Fraser sat dead last with only 16 votes. Conservative Party confidence in Mr. Heath - Prime minister from June 1970 to March 1974 - was rattled by his failure to win general elections in both February & October last year. Chairman of the influential 1922 Backbench Committee, Edward du Cann - whose 276 members are largely responsible for deciding party leaders - told BBC Television: "We have a new & rather exciting leader in Mrs. Thatcher who will make the Tory Party distinctive." At a press conference at the House of Commons, the new leader thanked her campaign team and looked forward to retaining Ted Heath and other members of the current Shadow Cabinet, though probably not in the same jobs. Mrs. Thatcher - a mother of twins married to Denis, an oil executive - put in a brief appearance at a party in Pimlico before having a working dinner with Conservative Chief Whip Humphrey Atkins in Westminster. Former Northern Ireland Minister, who was previously a Leader of the House of Commons, Willie Whitelaw was her closest challenger but still only gained 79 votes in comparison to the 146 she polled in the second ballot of the contest. The other candidates were Sir Geoffrey Howe, QC (Queen's Counsel), and Mr. Jim Prior who each received 19 votes. John Peyton trailed in last with just 11 votes.

A London Underground train has crashed at Moorgate station, killing the driver & atleast 29 passengers, and injuring more than 70 in the worst-ever tube disaster. The 8:37AM Northern City Line train from Drayton Park to Moorgate was packed with commuters going to work when it overshot the platform and ploughed into a dead-end tunnel at 8:46. Passengers on platform 9 said the train appeared to shudder & accelerate as it arrived at the station where it failed to stop and carried on past the boarding area into the tunnel before smashing through a sand barrier and into a brick wall at 30mph. The driver, 55 yr old Leslie Newson, was killed. As the front 3 carriages have been crushed together with the last 3 intact at the platform, the crash threw up a huge amount of soot & dust, and has left Moorgate station in total darkness. The rescue operation has involved several teams - police, London Underground staff, fire crews, doctors & nurses from St Bartholomew's Hospital, and members of the Salvation Army. They have been working all day to free the dead and the injured from the tangled mass of metal in atrocious conditions. Only one journalist, Gerard Kemp of the Daily Telegraph was allowed down into the tunnel. He reported, "It was a horrible mess of limbs and mangled iron. One of the great problems [for the rescue teams] was the intense heat down there. It must have been 120 degrees. It was like opening an oven door." Some 12hrs after the tragedy, a young policewoman was brought out of the front carriage after her foot was amputated. The last known survivor, a 26yr old man was brought out at 22:00PM. It is feared many more bodies will be found over the next few days, and the cause of the crash is, as yet, unknown and continues to be investigated.
