SEP 14, 1226: Just 2yrs after Italian mystic & friar Saint Francis of Assisi proclaimed hearing Christ's voice telling him to rebuild a church, [and also experiencing visions of the Crucifixion, and being the first person historically recorded to receive the marks of the stigmata (the suffering wounds of Jesus) on his hands, feet & side], his ordeals lead to the first recording of the Catholic practice of the Eucharist formally beginning in Avignon, France. The ritual sacrament during Mass is a sign of divinity, devotion & renewal where consecrated bread & wine is consumed representing the host body & blood of Christ in a doctrinal conversion known as transubstantiation. Also known as the Holy Communion or Lord's Supper, the Eucharist is a memorial of the sacrifice/martyrdom on the Cross with the receiving of the bread & wine meant to increase union with Jesus, along with the forgiving of venial sins and protection from damnation. The tradition began as meditation in monasteries & convents and is physically expressed by worshipping parishioners as gratitude to God for his gifts & love, while theologically is deemed as the strengthing of grace & faith.
